Our convict past.

2018 marks 150 years since the last convict ship, The Hougoumont, docked at the Swan River colony in modern-day Western Australia.

To commemorate this, Backpack was commissioned by Australia Post to design a stamp series featuring the three key penal settlements of the time.

Each stamp represents various aspects of each settlement, building a narrative and providing a window into convict life. This was achieved by layering imagery including the institutions themselves – Hyde Barracks in Sydney, Port Arthur in Van Diemen’s Land and Fremantle Gaol at Swan River – along with expressions of the human experience in the colonies – love tokens that were sent home to their families, images of convicts toiling and excerpts from convict newspapers.
